Resources

The fIRST resources have been evaluated according to a set of criteria relating to their quality and potential for use in a range of institutions.

Some resources on the site were commissioned by the Consortium. Most, however, were originally developed and used by member universities, and have been reviewed and adapted for fIRST so they can be used by other institutions.

The resources accepted by the Consortium must address an identified need, and fit within the Consortium's overall rationale and framework. This framework is based on conceptual and empirical work on supervision and the nature of research practice, education and training.

Resources available on the site include:

  • on-line activities that individuals can use as self-instructional materials to develop their expertise as postgraduate research student supervisors

  • complete instructions and materials for offering face-to-face staff development workshops

  • case studies, with comments from the authors/developers which may be useful for both supervisors and facilitators of supervisor development sessions

  • tools, such as questionnaires and other prompts for discussion with students, or materials for evaluating supervision. The tools come with instructions and comments by the developers

  • bibliographies on postgraduate research issues

  • links to other relevant sites.

Consortium members are encouraged to submit new resources for peer review by the steering committee review group. All resources on the site acknowledge the original authors or developers.
