Completion of research degrees

This case study can be used to explore and improve postgraduate completion rates. Its aim is to get you to think about the issues raised by the case study, to contextualise them, and to suggest ways and means to address them in departmental and individual practice in the future.

The case study was developed as part of a quality assurance project at LaTrobe University, when all departing postgraduate students over two years (both graduates and drop-outs) were interviewed.

All negative comments and those relating to students' reasons for departure were grouped by discipline. These comments were then circulated to the heads of all departments and schools, and through them to all supervisors.
